TEACHING MY MOTHER HOW TO GIVE BIRTH by Warsan Shire

Read this book a few times already, but Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth is a really nice collection of poems about family life. It covers immigration, marriage, domestic violence, etc.

My favorite poem this time around was “Birds.” It’s about a woman using pigeon blood on her wedding night. It’s very sweet and intimate because it’s really about the phone convo she and the narrator have about it… but then it’s also dark and twisted because of how proud the husband is of the sheets.

(This is the same writer who did the poems for Beyonce’s Lemonade.)
