This Indiana couple has been charged with felony counts of intimidation and criminal recklessness and misdemeanor counts of theft and criminal mischief after allegedly running two teenage brothers off the road.
In July of 2019, the couple, Gregory Perry-Jones (23) and Caitlyn Marie Smith (18), was driving a car and the twin brothers (both 14) were on bikes adorned with Trump flags. Snapchat videos show the couple confirming that the teens support Trump and ripping a flag from one of the bikes. Smith is heard saying, “Ya’ll scared, just like your president” when the teens threatened to call police.
This case highlights the power of political symbolism. The hatred associated with Trump memorabilia in day to day life can trigger reactive violence from others. These acts might not seem rational, but to induce fear in those donning the violent rhetoric of Trump is an attempt to confront the overt racialized and gendered hatred which can sometimes seem tucked away from mainstream society.
