Maria Celeste Ochoa Yoc de Ramirez (age 22) died in Texas this past Sunday while in ICE custody. This is the 8th death since October, which is when their fiscal year began. Last fiscal year, 5 people died in their custody, so they’ve already matched that number in half the time.
Ramirez had been in ICE custody since September 6, 2019 as an asylum seeker from Guatemala. She passed the fear interview and was waiting for her immigration proceedings to move forward. She was hospitalized since February for a variety of medical issues and one surgery. ICE did not disclose any additional information about her health conditions.
There is an ongoing investigation by Congress about their medical practices in general, though. That investigation started this past December following a series of allegations about inadequate medical care that led to at least two of these in-custody deaths.
