Last week, Iran announced the temporarily release of about 70,000 imprisoned people as a result of the rapid spread of coronavirus. The priority has been to release those with health conditions and/or short sentences. The UN and family members have also been pressuring them to release activists who are serving longer sentences, which they did for only a select few.
Iranian prisons were holding almost 190,000 people as of this January. Reports from February, when coronavirus officially entered the country, describe a prison situation that is overcrowded, unhygienic, and chaotic. Imprisoned people have said they have to provide their own soap.
Iran is currently the third most infected country in the world.
