Video footage of 12 men escaping Washington State Jail has been circulating around all day. The group got out around 7pm yesterday, by breaking a fire door and jumping the fence. Since then, six people have been found.
A couple hours later, halfway across the country in South Dakota, 9 women from the same unit escaped from a minimum security jail through an exterior door. One person was found right away. Three more were found today.
Both of these breakouts were motivated by the spread of COVID-19. Over 15 states in the U.S. are currently releasing thousands of people from jails as a response to the health risks associated with overcrowding.
