France’s lockdown began officially on March 17th. Since then, domestic violence reports increased by more than 30%. This percentage includes two murders.
It was recently announced that the government would pay for up to 20,000 nights of hotels to help people escape from abusive partners. They are also funding about one million dollars to organizations fighting domestic violence. Support centers have been set up at shopping stores, alert systems are available at pharmacies, and there is an online platform to send reports too.
France is one of many countries (including the U.S.) reporting higher rates of domestic violence as a result of lockdown restrictions. Cases almost doubled in Hubei, China. There have been similar spikes in Spain, Italy, and Brazil.
