Governor Andrew Cuomo announced today that he’s increasing the fine for violating social distancing rules in New York from $500 to $1000.
It’s clear, however, that the fines and threat of fines aren’t working. It’s also clear that telling people to stay home isn’t working. Every day people are surprised all over again by this reality.
Instead of criminalizing coronavirus via fines and jail time and spending money on policing, staying home should be incentivized. Give people resources that make staying home more attractive and more possible—free internet, food stamps, anything.
