Prison labor in the age of coronavirus, Fck Prison

This past weekend, the Florida Department of Corrections (FDC) announced that all staff in jails and prisons will be required to wear facemasks. But, instead of providing protective gear for their employees themselves, imprisoned people will be the ones making the masks for them to wear.

This decision is part of an ongoing business deal between FCD and Prison Rehabilitative Industries and Diversified Enterprises (P.R.I.D.E.). That company is already overseeing clothing manufacturing in these prisons, for which they pay imprisoned workers between 20 and 50 cents per hour, so they consider themselves to be “uniquely situated” to transition into making cloth masks.
